Perhaps what you did not know about jellyfish is that their size is so variable that they can be smaller than a fingernail or reach up to three meters in diameter and 30 meters in length.

Jellyfish are those beings that we do not like to meet when we go to the beach, and  their venom permeates our skin and can cause us great discomfort. Even so, it must be recognized that they are incredible beings, of majestic beauty and that they do not go unnoticed. There are a number of curiosities that you may not have known about jellyfish.

They are 95% water

We have always seen jellyfish as a mass of jelly, as they have no shell, no skeleton, and no bone structure. However, 95% of their body is water, so they require even more water to survive.

In fact, if something expels them from their natural aquatic habitat, they die, since most of their body is water they need it to survive.

There are jellyfish all over the world

It does not matter where in the world you go, because you will not be able to flee from them. There are jellyfish in all the oceans of the world and in all the seas. Some are itchy and others are not, some are larger and others smaller, some more colorful, and others less, but they exist in every corner of the earth.

The smallest in the world

The smallest jellyfish in the world is also the second most poisonous,  and is called irukandji or carukia barnesi. It measures less than a fingernail of our hand.

The first most poisonous in the world is the chironex fleckeri, also known as the sea wasp. And not only that, but it is considered the most lethal living being on the planet above many known as the red coral or others.

Some shine

Not all of them are itchy, but not all of them shine However, there are certain species that glow and not only in the dark, but their composition is bright all the time. This is a defense method that makes predators understand that they are toxic and that it is better not to approach them.

There are them with teeth

If we already know how it hurts when a jellyfish stings us, we cannot even think about what it will be like to bite us. Yes, we said ‘bite’ because there is a species known as ‘comb jellyfish’, which has several hundred rows of teeth that are actually small stiff hairs suitable in such a way that they are sharp and can pierce or tear prey up to make it reach the stomach.

This species, as was obvious, is carnivorous and cannibalistic, so it can feed on other jellyfish as well.

Cloning

One of the curiosities that you did not know about jellyfish is that they have cloning power and capacity. If one is cut in half, both halves can regenerate and become two independent jellyfish.

Tangles

If you’ve ever been bitten by a jellyfish, you’ve probably thought that I wish its tentacles would get tangled up and it couldn’t bite anyone else again. Did you know? This will never happen. Their tentacles, although some are very long, are very slippery, so they cannot become entangled or sting themselves, although they can bite other jellyfish.

The biggest

Since we are talking about the smallest copy, it is also worth mentioning the largest. It is known as the lion’s mane and is the largest species in the world. They can reach two or three meters in diameter and 30 meters long, more than a blue whale!

You can eat them

There are some that are eaten. In Korea, for example, they prepare jellyfish salad, and in Japan there are candies that contain jellyfish powder. Would you dare to try them?

Crab walkers

If among us it is fashionable to be a dog walker, among the jellyfish what is carried is to walk the crabs. Yes, these get on top and they take them on a long journey. Crabs are not harmed by poison due to their strong shells.
