The 5 Biggest Cat Breeds
One of the reasons why many people choose a feline as a pet is because of its size, which adapts to any home. However, there are huge breeds compared to the rest. In this article we tell you which are the biggest cats.
What are the biggest cats?
Among the dozens of breeds that we can find around the world, some are characterized by their large size. The largest cats belong to them:
1. Maine Coon
With a weight of 11 kilos and a length of 70 centimeters (adult males), this feline that emerged after the crossing of domestic and wild cats from the United States draws a lot of attention.
Although the Maine Coon – the photo that opens this article – is huge, its temperament is similar to that of other breeds, and it can even be said that it is more friendly and affectionate than the rest. He likes to play very much and has the ability to meow in different tones. As for its coat, the most common is the brown and white brindle, although there are also black, gray, orange and reddish.
2. Savannah
This is another of the largest cats that exist, which is famous for its fur similar to that of a leopard. The breed arose after the cross between a domestic cat and a wild one, of the Serval race, native to Africa.
Although the savannah can weigh about 11 kilos, its appearance appears more streamlined due to the length of its body. In addition, it is characterized by having very long legs and tail. One of the curiosities of this breed is that its character is very docile and affectionate.
3. Ragdoll
Not only is it one of the most beautiful because it looks like a stuffed animal, it is also among the largest cats in the world: an adult male can weigh up to nine kilos and measure about 90 centimeters. Females do not exceed seven kilos and 60 centimeters.
The ragdoll – which means ‘rag doll’ in English – arose after crossing with several races, including the Siamese, the Persian and the Burmese. It is a very calm, docile and intelligent cat. Its fur is mostly white and abundant, and when you hold it, it relaxes so much that it seems to have ‘disarmed’, hence its name.
4. Turkish Van
It is a rare breed outside its native area, Lake Van, in Turkey (hence the name). The coat is one of its main characteristics: with several layers to withstand the cold of the high mountains where it was born. Despite being thick, it is also quite soft, like rabbit fur.
The Turkish Van cat can weigh about seven kilos and measure up to a meter in length between the snout and the tip of the tail ; it is strong and muscular, its neck is short and its hind legs are longer than the front ones. He is quite temperamental, curious, active and has no problem living with other cats, as long as he is the leader. He also needs unconditional dedication, as he does not like to be alone.
5. Norwegian Forest Cat
With a more than curious name, this is another of the largest cats that exist: males reach nine kilos in weight. Since it has a lot of hair, it seems even larger. The coat can vary in color, although it always has some white in its composition.
The Norwegian forest is native to Scandinavia, although it has become a very common pet throughout Europe. Regarding its behavior, this breed is very active outdoors –loves to climb trees– and quiet indoors; It is also characterized by being curious, intelligent and affectionate.
