Leopard Gecko: An Ideal Pet
When we think of a pet of small size and basic requirements, our mind automatically turns to well-known mammals. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs or rabbits are the first option that many consider when it comes to getting an animal. Even so, there are more exotic options but no less valid for that. This is the case of the leopard gecko.
Introducing this little reptile
The leopard gecko ( Eublepharis macularius ) is a species of gecko in the family Eublepharidae. We show you some of its characteristics:
- They are native to semi-desert areas, and are distributed throughout the Middle East.
- Its size is 15 to 30 cm, the tail representing 1/3 of its total length. This characteristic tail serves as a fat reserve, and can be released in dangerous situations.
- Its typical coloration is yellowish with brown spots, although there are several morphotypes produced by captive breeding.
- In the wild they usually live in colonies, although they adapt very well to a solitary life. Males are extremely territorial.
- They are very docile animals, and it is very strange to see them adopting aggressive behaviors.
- They are insectivores. They feed on crickets, cockroaches, and worms among others. They do not accept any type of vegetable.
Nice and interesting animal, right? We have good news, because these reptiles are available in any specialized store and make an excellent pet for both adults and children. If you dare to have one, we will tell you below how to prepare.
What do I need to have a leopard gecko?
Despite being easy to care for, leopard geckos require considerable prior preparation.
Terrarium
The terrarium can be from the cheapest to the most sophisticated, depending on what you want to spend. Let’s face it, the animal does not care whether the cabin is made of plastic or glass, the important thing is the size and ventilation.
Appropriate measurements are 70 centimeters long by 40 wide for a couple. It is very important never to put two males together, as they can seriously injure each other. We must emphasize the importance of the terrarium having a correct ventilation system, so buying a plastic box will not be enough.
As a substrate, geckos do just about anything. There is only one rule: it has to be made up of organic matter. These animals hunt their prey only with their jaws, and it is common for them to carry debris from the ground with them. For this reason, sand and stones are totally discouraged, since the animal is not able to digest them and they can cause death.
- The substrate to be used varies from toilet paper, to corn bed, coconut fiber or rabbit peat.
It is necessary to place elements of environmental enrichment. Branches, hollow logs or plastic or live plants will make the animal feel like in its natural environment.
Humidity and temperature
Being an animal of a semi-desert and cold-blooded environment, temperature plays an essential role in its survival.
There must be a temperature gradient in the terrarium, the ideal average being 28 degrees. This is achieved by placing a reptile heating blanket in one half of it (always in the lower part and glued on the outside to avoid burns). Thus the animal can decide if it wants to stay in a warmer or colder area, thermoregulating its body temperature.
As far as humidity is concerned, placing a semi-open container with wet toilet paper in which the animal can get into the terrarium will be enough. They require moisture to make a correct skin change, so this element should not be underestimated.
Feeding
Leopard geckos are insectivorous animals. This is, perhaps, the biggest “but” when considering having these pets. It is necessary to have colonies of crickets, cockroaches and worms at home to offer them a varied diet. Specialized stores have these insects at very cheap prices.
- Hunting insects in the field and feeding them to the animal will never be an option, as they can carry parasites and end their life.
These animals usually eat every 2-3 days as adults, and almost every day as young. It is essential to provide calcium and vitamin D3 powder in two of your meals a week. Again, these vitamin supplements are found in specialized stores.
Benefits of owning a leopard gecko
Despite the initial work that may be involved in adapting to the needs of this friendly animal, its benefits as a pet are countless:
- They are extremely docile animals that can be held, handled and caressed. You can even take them out daily to explore small spaces or accompany you, but not more than half an hour.
- They exhibit behaviors that are impossible to see in many other pets. Processes such as shedding or hunting insects are fascinating, and no domestic mammal will be able to show you.
- They live up to 15 years, unlike many typical small mammals in houses.
- They will teach the youngest members of the household to understand the value of biodiversity, and not only focus on the furry animals closest to human beings.
In conclusion, you may have seen that these beautiful animals are an ideal pet to start in the world of herpetology.
Although they require prior preparation, this reptile will give you years of company and knowledge about nature.
