Is Your Dog Obedient? Find Out
The answer to this question is somewhat more extensive than simply stating that if your dog does what you tell him, he is obedient. Why do we say this? Because sometimes, our dog can be obedient when we are in front, but at the same time, disobey specific orders when we are away from home.
These commands may be not to climb on the sofa or bed, not to spread garbage around the house, or not to chew on shoes. It is obvious that, if when you get home, you see that your animal has done some or all of these tricks, it is not obedient.
The question is: why is it when I am present? The answer is obvious; because you have taught him that that particular act carries punishment. Do you also punish him when you see what he did while you were away?
Teach him to be obedient
There are several commands that you cannot allow your animal to bypass, such as:
- Come here
- Loose
- Do not!
- Goes up
- Short
Teaching your dog to be obedient to these commands will take time and patience. You must indicate with your hand what you want the dog to do.
For example, if he has an object in his mouth that you want him to let go, you can bring your hand closer while saying “let go” so that the dog relates what you want him to do. If you want it to go up somewhere, hit the place with your hand while saying “go up” or if you want it to come down, point your finger at the ground while saying “come down”.
When the dog has related all these words to the actions you want him to perform, try to bait so that he falls into the trap of not being obedient and that gives you room to practice your training. If he chews on your shoes, leave them in between to see what he does when you are not looking at him. Do not lose sight of him if you do not want to lose some shoes.
The safest thing is that it will be thrown at them, but if you do it often and say “let go” while you pull it, the dog will relate your order to the particular slippers and how it would be better not to catch them. After a while in which the animal has already learned this, you can try to leave the slippers in the middle when you go out and see the reaction that the animal has.
If your dog hasn’t touched the slippers when you return, congratulations! You have a very obedient dog. If, on the contrary, you have to buy new ones, don’t be discouraged, keep trying. Of course, this time use the old ones for it.
Give rewards and give punishments
It is fully proven that the best way to train an animal to be obedient is to reward good deeds and punish bad deeds. When we speak of punishment we are not referring to physical punishment, not even to scare the animal, since this will only traumatize it.
While you are training your pet, reward him when he is obedient, even if it was only once that he obeyed one of your commands. Always show him his “gift” and if he does not obey, do not give it to him. You can speak to him in a sweet and caring way as you try to teach him to be obedient and tell him what to do if he wants his reward.
For your dog to learn more easily to be obedient:
- Schedule workouts after exercising. Animals that live in apartments have a large amount of stored energy, so it will be more difficult for the animal to focus on training if it is willing to release that energy. If you make him exercise before, without exhausting him, it will be easier for him to learn to be obedient.
- Don’t teach him everything at once. Make a planning and decide what you are going to teach your pet every day. First one thing and then another; If you try to teach everything at once, you will saturate his head and he will not understand anything.
- Don’t let him do his will. Sometimes our pets do funny things, that even when they are disobeying us, they make us laugh. Suppress that impulse, you are the boss and the animal must know it. You must be consistent with what you ask of him and what you allow him to do.
