Some curiosities of the elephant

His ears

Did you know that elephants use their ears as a temperature regulator ? As they have a slow metabolism and a large volume, it is difficult for them to stay a little cold, since they live in very hot climates, and their ears help them to do so.

African elephants also use their ears against threats. As they are larger than those of other species of elephants, they move them abruptly and thus frighten their predators.

They always go in herds

You will never see an elephant just because they live, walk, migrate and eat in herds. In fact, when there are baby elephants, they surround them to protect them and if the mother died, any other member of the herd would take care of him.

They sleep standing up

Adult elephants always sleep standing up. This is a way to protect themselves from predators because if they were caught lying down, while lifting the weight they have, they could be eaten.

Baby elephants, however, do go to sleep, although always surrounded by adults.

Bathe in mud

Although we have surely seen elephants bathing in rivers and lakes in many reports, photos and magazines, they also often bathe in mud, because it is cold and also eliminates parasites.

His weight

The African elephant is the largest known species among the pachyderms  and can reach seven tons. Can you imagine meeting one of these specimens? Even so, there was a known case of an elephant weighing 11 tons.

Divided herds

When the male elephant reaches 12 years of age, he leaves the herd, which means that there are only females and calves in the herds. Males can come together in pairs or groups of three and fight to win over a female.

Eat, eat and eat

If you were surprised to learn that a koala spends 22 hours sleeping, how about knowing that an elephant spends 16 hours eating?   Their mothers don’t have to tell them ‘eat to make yourself big’. In fact, it is estimated that an elephant can eat an average of 220 kilos of food per day.
