Catalburun: All About This Turkish Breed Of Dog
Dogs never cease to amaze us, and we get to know more and more breeds, it seems endless! On this occasion we want to talk about what is known as ‘the dog with two noses’, the catalburun.
What you should know about catalburun
Source
Its name is made up of two Turkish words: catal, which means ‘fork’ and burun, which means ‘nose’. It comes from Turkey and, as we said before, its nose is one of the most striking things about this breed. It seems to have double it, although this does not add any extra incentive to its nose.
There is not much history that corroborates its origin and the trajectory that led it to become a race, although there is a theory that seems very accepted. These dogs are believed to have been part of the Roman Empire and were the faithful companions of Roman soldiers when they went to battle. This should not surprise us, as this breed clearly falls into the group of molossi, which are excellent trackers.
On the other hand, it is also claimed that they are the result of the cross between the Assyrian Molossians, the Roman Molossians and those of England. The Romans wanted perfect dogs to watch over their flocks. To do this, they chose three of the races that they knew and considered ideal for this purpose, and mixed them until they obtained Catalburun.
Characteristics of catalburun
The Catalburun dog is large in size, it can weigh about 25 kilos and measure up to 50 centimeters tall. It has strong limbs and a powerful appearance. His ears are long, but without a doubt, the most representative of his face is his double nose, which, although it does not give any special power to his nose, does make him have a friendly face.
His hair is short and his color usually has brown tones, although we can also find it tricolor, combined with black and white, for example. His rounded eyes and drooping upper eyelids give him that noble air on his face that tells you that you are before a loving and friendly dog.
They have the appearance of a hunting dog, for which they are still used to this day, although their face has more the appearance of a bloodhound. Curiously, their nose is less olfactory than that of dogs that only have one nose. Tell me what you brag about and I’ll tell you what you lack …
Character of catalburun
Despite the fact that hunting dogs are usually independent and solitary, if you take a dog of this breed from puppyhood and socialize it in the right way, you will find in it a loyal, friendly and affectionate animal even with children.
He is patient and persevering, essential qualities to live with the family and to defend it. They are agile and fast, which is another indication, in addition to their size, that they will need a lot of exercise, and possibly they will be animals that do not adapt well to small spaces.
Catalburun care
Their physical strength reflects very well their inner strength, so these animals do not usually have specific diseases that affect their breed, and they have a life expectancy of between 12 and 14 years. His hair, being short, does not need specific care other than weekly brushing to help remove dead hair.
Their ears, due to their length and flaccidity, can be a source of parasites and other insects that cause diseases in our pet. To avoid this, nothing better than a deep cleaning at least two or three times a week.
And, of course, as we mentioned before, physical exercise is essential to preserve your good health and the strength of your joints and muscular system.
Do you think the Catalburun is the ideal dog for you? Well, don’t think twice and adopt one. In it you will find a faithful and loyal friend, and a good companion to live with as a family.
