The oldest social theories say that work is an exclusive human activity. However, a growing number of studies and experiments claim that dogs at work provide many benefits.

Increased work pressure can be accompanied by a high level of stress. The incorporation of dogs at work appears as an excellent option to achieve a more relaxed environment.

What are the benefits of incorporating dogs at work?

The introduction of animals into the work environment is controversial in many countries. Also in those where this experience is already allowed. Among other things, because there are legal and hygiene issues that can be controversial.

The first initiatives with dogs at work

The United Kingdom was the pioneer in this type of initiative. This year 2017, owners and pets celebrated 20 years working together. In the United States the initiative is young, but already more than 40 thousand companies call themselves dogfriendly. Other countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand also encourage this practice in the media.

In Spain the initiative to have dogs at work is still highly debated. Even companies specializing in pet products have restrictions on the entry of animals into their facilities.

The benefits of introducing dogs to work

    Animals have the ability to reassure and cheer. For this reason, they are used in many therapies for motor and psychological disorders. Including dogs at work can improve spirits and decrease stress.
  2. Emotionally healthier environments.
    Calm people provide a healthier living environment. Human beings tend to be more relaxed in the company of their pets. That improves the relationship between co-workers.
  3. Increase in production.
    Stress-free and healthy employees are more productive. It’s not just about quantity. People perform better when they feel comfortable. Therefore, the quality of production improves along with the quality of life of the worker.
  4. Balance between personal and professional life.
    Many people have difficulty reconciling work obligations with personal life responsibilities. A pet requires care and attention. Introducing dogs to work lessens their owners’ concern. Among other things, because they are able to take care of them without abandoning their tasks.
  5. Less lonely pets.
    Many pets spend a lot of time alone while their owners work throughout the day. That favors sedentary lifestyle and depressive states. Dogs at work are less lonely and can live with their owners and other animals. The health of your best friend is also favored.

Are there requirements to have dogs at work?

First of all, you will be required to comply with the grooming and hygiene of the animal. As it is a public place, sanitation has to be reinforced to avoid contamination.

Another related issue is caution with the chemicals used. Substances of high toxicity or strong odor can annoy, cause allergies and even make pets sick. You must be aware that it is your responsibility to ensure the welfare of your pet.

On the part of the company, the environment must be prepared to receive pets.

Obviously, any pet that comes to work with us must have access to a bowl for water and another for food. In other words, l os dogs at work should have specific places for nutrition and hydration. Otherwise, they can become hyperactive or anxious and cause damage to tools, furniture, or workspaces.

It is also good that the dog can have enough space to move around.

  • Control and health. Animals must be vaccinated and antiparasitic treatment up to date. It is not allowed to bring sick or parasite-affected dogs to the workplace.
  • Waste. Dogs at work need either an area to urinate and / or evacuate or a schedule of walks where they can attend to their needs. We must attend to this to prevent the dog from performing his needs in the workplace and affecting other people.
  • Appointment with the vet. Ideally, take the pet to the vet for a review before introducing it into the work environment.
  • The owner must also take charge of the previous socialization of the pet. The socialization process is highly recommended to teach the animal to live peacefully with other animals and people. Obviously aggressive behavior animals are not allowed in the work environment.

With respect and a collective conscience, dogs at work are wonderful company and a good performance stimulus. Both companies, pets and owners win.

Cats too!

In case cats are allowed, like in Japan,  don’t forget their litter box. We recommend that you set one for the  litter boxes.  The place must be strategically thought to control the smell. It is preferable to choose a terrace, garden or outdoor spaces with good ventilation.
